Charliane Harris mixes humorous Southern-fried fantasy with biting satirical commentary in her seventh novel to feature Sookie Stackhouse, the bubbly telepathic barmaid from Bon Temps, La. Sookie attends an all-important central U.S. vamp summit on the shores of Lake Michigan as a "human geiger counter" for Sophie-Anne Leclerq, vampire queen of a Louisiana weakened by Hurricane Katrina and who will be tried during the event for murdering her husband, and king. Sookie knows the queen is innocent, but she's hardly prepared for other shocking murders, not to mention protests by the Fellowship of the Sun, a right-wing anti-vampire movement. Her sleuthing skills, along with those of her new telepath friend, Barry the Bellboy, are put to the extreme test.

Harris juggles a large cast, including several romantic contenders for Sookie's heart, with effortless exuberance. I marvel at the imagination of Harris as she plucks new beings and social systems from out of seeming thin air and breathes life into them with absolute believability and skill. A great read that continues to keep me enthralled by Sookie's world. I will definitely keep with this series.

Definitely Dead

The long-awaited Definitely Dead, the further adventures of Sookie Stackhouse, cocktail waitress and telepath, has arrived. With Bon Temps in the grip of wedding fever – but not, alas, Sookie’s – our heroine travels to New Orleans to close out her cousin Hadley’s apartment. (Have you read the short story that sets this up, “One Word Answer”? It was in the anthology BITE.) Hadley’s landlady is a forthright witch, and the two young women uncover a big surprise when Hadley’s place is unsealed.

This was worth the price of a hard-cover. I love this series and hope that it continues. It may be made into a series in America - let's hope so. I'd love to see it. Sookie appears to have a real, breathing boyfriend at the end of this novel and a good friend. Plus she gets even further involved in the politics of the supe world.

Dead as a Doornail

In the fifth book in the series cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse turns sleuth to investigate a mysterious sniper who has set his sights on the local changeling population, especially when her own brother Jason, a newly transformed were-panther, becomes the prime suspect in the deadly series of attacks.

Like the rest of this series, this book is a scary, fun romp through the world of supes (supernaturals, for the uninitiated). I can't wait to read the next one.

Maybe that's why, when she comes across a semi-naked vampire on the road home from work, she doesn't just drive on by, even though she knows it almost certainly means trouble. Turns out the vampire hasn't a clue as to who he is. But Sookie does. It's Eric, still as scary and sexy - and dead - as the day she first met him. But now that he has amnesia, Eric is sweet, vulnerable, and in need of Sookie's help - because whoever took his memory now wants his life. Sookie's investigation into why leads straight into a dangerous battle among witches, vampires and werewolves. But the greater danger could be to Sookie's heart - because the kinder, gentler Eric is very difficult to resist.

I love this series! Black humour, easy to read and at times raunchy and scary. It would make a fantastic TV series too. It was a little sad to see Eric revert to his big old bad self and not remember Sookie caring for him and the relationship that developed. I wonder what will happen next - am about to order the next two books in the series. The story lines always keep you guessing and the characters are really interesting.

When she finally catches up with the errant vampire, he is in big trouble and caught in an act of serious betrayal. This raises serious doubts as to whether she should save him or start sharpening a few stakes of her own ...

Book three in a series. Easy to read, a horror that doesn't take itself too seriously. Sookie is a great character and the vampires in her life are sexy and mysterious. I can't wait to read the next book - I have to order them from my local Dymocks.
